Our History:70 Years of Tape Storage

Fujifilm Recording Media has a long history of developing cutting-edge storage technologies. In 1994, Fujifilm announced the Advanced Super Thin Layer and High-Output Metal Media (ATOMM) technology, which was a breakthrough in DTL tape storage, providing up to 20GB of storage. In 2000, Fujifilm released the first generation of LTO Ultrium, which allowed for up to 100GB of storage. Eight years later, Fujifilm patented Barium Ferrite (BaFe) technology, which was utilized in LTO Ultrium 7, enabling the creation of the first multi-terabyte tapes from IBM and STK.

In 2022, the LTO Ultrium roadmap was extended to generation 14, offering a storage capacity of 91.44PB, surpassing the capacity of prior LTO-9 cartridges by 32 times. But we are not done yet. In partnership with IBM, we announced the future potential for up to 580 TB on a single tape cartridge with our next generation technology — a high density magnetic particle called Strontium Ferrite. Fujifilm Data Management Solutions continues to innovate and lead the industry in tape storage technology.
